NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Happy October McLane Families, 


School safety is our number priority at McLane Elementary School, in fact we just had a fire drill last Wednesday. Our students were phenomenal.  Here are a few safety procedures that we have implemented at McLane.

 

Our staff regularly talks with our students about safety procedures and practice drills monthly.  Drills include fire, earthquake, shelter in place and lockdown.

 

All exterior doors are locked all day.  The front door, when it is finished will be the only door that is accessible by the public during school hours. The new entrance will require all visitors and volunteers to check into the office. This procedure ensures that everyone must sign in prior to access our campus. 

 

In the event of a major emergency, staff are assigned specific roles in order to support our students until emergency personnel arrive. 

 

Families and their identified emergency contacts will be notified of emergencies via the automated School Messenger phone calls, emails, social media and our school/district website.  

 

If directed by law enforcement to evacuate our campus, families will be notified of the reunification site via the above communication routes. School personnel will release students to parents and identified emergency contacts only.  Please make sure that you have updated your emergency contact information if needed.


CONFERENCES

Half day release at 12:10 - Tuesday, October 22nd to Friday, October 25th 


Parent-Teacher Conferences are upon us and all families will be able to schedule their conference using Skyward’s Family Access Online Scheduling. 


First Step

Do this as soon as possible to ensure you are ready to schedule your conference. Please make sure you are able to sign into Skyward Family Access by following this link


Conferences

Tuesday, October 22nd - Thursday, October 24th

Scheduling times are 12:45 to 4:05.  Please note that each conference time is 20 minutes long. This is important to allow time to prepare for the next conference. Please arrive and depart on time.


Early Release

Monday is a regular scheduled day. Tuesday, October 22nd - Friday October 24th release time is at 12:10.  Please note that there is no Preschool Tuesday through Friday of conference week.


Scheduling Conferences

**Families with two or more students at McLane will be able to  sign up for conferences on October 7th.


**Scheduling is open to all McLane families from October 9th - October 20th.  


Parents who do not have access to the Internet can come to the McLane office from 8:30-4:00 on any school day to use our computers.  We will have staff available in the main office to help anyone who needs assistance with scheduling their student(s).

CLASSROOM TREATS

Please contact individual teachers about their snack policy, this includes birthday treats.

Healthy snacks are strongly encouraged.  All items must be store bought with a list of ingredients.  Due to allergies please do not send a snack with nuts. Some treat ideas include pretzels, breakfast bars, granola bars (no nuts), string cheese, fruit, and raw vegetables.  Your cooperation helps to encourage all students to make healthier choices.


SPIRIT DAYS

Every Wednesday students and staff are encourage to wear their favorite college gear.


Every Friday students and staff are encourage to wear their ‘McLane wear’ or Favorite Sports Team gear.

Watch for permission slips to be coming home soon!  Please make sure that they are signed and returned to teachers.


Thank you to everyone who has donated money for daffodil bulbs this year.

The kids from McLane Elementary School will plant the bulbs on Friday, October 18th, at 9:30am. Volunteers are more than welcome to come and assist.  We need your help. Rain or shine….. Mark your calendars today. 

If you have not contributed to bulbs this year and desire to do so, we still could use more money.  Please send checks to kids bulb planting, McLane Elementary School, 200 Delphi Road, Olympia WA, 98502. Your donation is Tax deductible. A special thank you to each and every person who has donated to the fund.  We have ordered 5000 bulbs to plant.

BENCHES AND MORE BENCHES..........Thank you to the Eagle Scouts who have
constructed benches for our trail and to those families that dedicated a
bench to a family member or friend.  We can make arrangements for a bench if
you want to contribute one.  They are very helpful.

It is so much fun watching these McLane School kids grow up to be successful adults who contribute so much to our society.

You are all a part of this. Thank you to each of you.

LIBRARY NEWS

Welcome back to another great school year!  We are so happy to be back in our beautiful library.  All classes have been to visit a couple of times to learn how the library works and to check out books. It is always exciting to see faces light up when finding a book they’ve always wanted to read, but it is especially true when Kindergarten students get to choose a book off the shelf themselves to take home!  If you do not know your child’s library day, please contact the classroom teacher or me directly so you’ll always know when to have books returned in a timely manner. Scholastic Fall Book Fair is coming during conference week!  The fair will open Monday, October 21st and run through the week until Friday, October 25th.  It will be held in the library and open at 8:00 each morning. It will close at 5:00 pm Mon.-Thur. and at noon on Friday.  This year there will be an eWallet feature available. Families will be able to put money into their child’s eWallet account that can be accessed here at school when they purchase items.  No need to send money! Watch for more information to come home a week before the fair.


The library is looking for adult volunteers that would like to read with or to students during our SSR (Silent Sustained Reading) block of time.  The times we have SSR is from 10:55-12:40 everyday. All grades, K-5, participate and could benefit from having adults interact with them during this reading time.  Volunteers would have to get a background clearance check through the Olympia School District website or click this link:


BACK TO SCHOOL INFORMATION - REMINDER

 1. Please remember to check your student’s packet that they bring home in the first week.  Complete and return the following documents as soon as possible to your student’s classroom teacher.  Review, make changes and sign the Student Enrollment Form, Student Health Information, Student Housing Survey (if applicable) and Free/Reduced Lunch application (if applicable).  Also review the Rights and Responsibilities Handbook and sign the following pages 63, 65 and 67.  Return all applicable, signed forms to school as soon as possible


2. In accordance with the Olympia School District volunteer policy, all volunteers who work with students, help or visit the classroom, go on field trips, etc. must have on file a Volunteer Application form completed and they need to have been given clearance. Forms can be found on the OSD website.


 3. Please send in notes with any student pick-up changes to the office and we will get them a slip for the end of the day to avoid any confusion. Please include child’s first and last name, teacher’s name, also date and sign the note. If riding a bus include Bus Route #, which can be found through this link.

 

2019-20 SCHOOL YEAR VOLUNTEERS

All applications processed before 1pm, May 17th, 2019 will have an expiration date of July 1st 2019.   Volunteers will need to renew their applications for the 2019-2020 school year.

You must register every year on-line at the OSD website, (Can take 7 to 10 days to be approved) 

Thank you for doing this early!

  • deliver an item to the classroom
  • walk your child to their classroom

  • attend a staff led meeting
  • take a staff led tour of the school
  • attend a staff led assembly
