NOVEMBER 2020 NEWSLETTER

PRINCIPAL NOTES:

Dear McLane Families,

November is officially here and this gets us close to being 1/4 of the way through the school year. While the 2020 school year has presented its fair share of challenges, I hope there is one challenge we can all rally behind and that would be a canned food drive for our community. We all have a ton to be thankful for and a strong community (Word of the Week!) is at the top of the list. This month we will be partnering with Capital High School for a canned food drive; more info to come.

I would personally like to thank all of our Veterans and their families who serve our country. My Grandfather and Father both served in the United States Military and it’s truly a blessing that so many people work relentlessly to defend our country. In a few weeks, we will be celebrating Veterans Day at McLane and I would be excited to work with any of our remarkable Veterans and their families within the McLane Community who would like to be part of our assembly on Nov 13th. Please reach out to me directly at 360-596-6605 or [email protected]

Lastly, I just want to say, “Keep it up!” I know that there are still many challenges with distance learning and this is by no means ideal for most students. Our teachers will continue to work to provide the best possible education for your family. Additionally, please know that we will be ready to welcome students back once we have the guidance from the health department to do so.

GIVING TREE:

At this time of year, we have families that need a bit of help for the holidays. It has been a long time tradition to provide families within our McLane community with a small token of goodwill.  Last year we supported 16 families.  The process has changed somewhat over the years but the spirit of giving has remained the same.  Once again this year we are asking for  only Safeway and Target gift cards. We choose these two stores because both stores are in our family neighborhood. The goal is to give $50 per child and $50 per family for dinner!

Please donate by December 11th. This allows time for receiving families to pick up before school is released for winter break. You can either bring in cash donations or gift cards in $25 or $50 marked amounts to the front office or directly to the PTSO. Any donation is  welcome!

We hope to have either money donations directly to PTSO, or actual gift cards for either Safeway or Target. Your generosity is much appreciated

THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY:

LIBRARY NEWS:

This school year brings many new challenges, but we’re still going to be able to have a Fall Scholastic Book Fair.  Scholastic will hold a book fair for us on line starting November 9th and run through November 22nd.  For every dollar spent, McLane will get 25% of the purchase back in rewards.  Use this link to shop online:

https://www.scholastic.com/bf/mclaneelementaryschool3

Students are also able to check out books from the school using curbside pick-up.  Your student may access Destiny Discover through their Library course in Schoology to put up to 4 books on hold.  I will notify families via Remind when books are ready for pick up.  I am available at the school Monday-Friday 8:00-4:00 for pick up.  Just call the phone number posted on the front window by the door and I’ll walk the books out to you.  Other options are Tuesday 11:30-1:00 during the lunch hour or Thursday 3:00-4:00.

We are also holding a Book Club time on Mondays.  Kindergarten, first, and second grades meet at 11:30-12:00 and 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade meet at 3:00-3:45.  They can access the

books we’re reading via their Library course in Schoology under the “Book Club” button.  This is also where they can find the zoom link to join the sessions.  This is an optional activity to hear many kinds of stories and enjoy talking with others.

SNOW AND SEVERE WEATHER CONDITIONS:

The Olympia School District will inform you as soon as possible when school schedules change through our phone/email messaging system, our district website and district social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter).

The school district will make every effort to operate normally, despite the weather. On rare occasions, however, weather conditions may make it necessary to modify bus routes, and when that occurs, media outlets will be asked to announce the use of "snow routes" or "emergency routes." Below you will find our Snow Bulletin & Emergency Snow Routes for the 2019-20 school year:
